Hi, I'm Sydnie Dobkin! I'm a therapist, a DBT enthusiast, and someone who genuinely loves helping people build meaningful lives. I earned my Master's in Counseling from The Family Institute at Northwestern University, where I later completed a post-graduate fellowship on the Mindfulness and Behavioral Therapies Team. I'm also a DBT-Linehan Board of Certification, Certified Clinician™, and I have spent over a decade providing comprehensive, adherent DBT.
Over the years, I've had the opportunity to work across different levels of care, including serving as the Director of Adolescent DBT at a DBT-Linehan Certified Program. My experiences have deepened my passion for working with teens and families, especially when emotions are intense, relationships feel strained, or progress seems stalled. Today, I continue to support families and parents through a behavioral, skills-based lens.
I currently provide psychotherapy to adolescents, young adults, and families navigating emotion dysregulation, impulsivity, eating disorders, trauma, suicidality, and self-injurious behaviors. My approach is grounded in evidence-based treatments like DBT, RO-DBT, DBT Prolonged Exposure, SPACE, and ACT. I also integrate psychodynamic thinking, along with yoga-informed therapy and Reiki to treat each person as a whole human.
At the core of my work is a simple goal: to help clients not just feel better, but build skills they can actually use in their real lives, in the moments that matter most. I care deeply about providing thoughtful, culturally responsive care and creating a space where people feel both supported and challenged to grow.
Outside of work, you can usually find me traveling, snuggling with my dog Harold, or on a mission to find the best sushi in the city. I'm also a big fan of Taylor Swift, The 1975, and Harry Styles. When I'm off the clock, I'm probably reading a YA novel, watching a little too much TV, or adding to my ever-growing crystal collection.
College Circles is designed for parents or guardians of high school students who are navigating the college admissions process. It's a small-group experience combining expert admissions insights with emotional and relational support. Participating families typically have students in Grades 10 through 12.
College Circles is a group program focused on the parent experience. It combines admissions expertise with the emotional and relational support of a DBT-certified therapist. One-on-one consulting focuses directly on a student's application. College Circles sessions include in-depth discussions of the college admissions process. During these sessions, our admissions professionals will answer many questions about individual family and student circumstances. However, the College Circles team does not review application materials, student profiles, course choices, activity lists, etc. as a part of this program.
The College Circles group provides a space for parents to share experiences, learn through group discussions, exchange information, and gain support from professionals. The 8-week format allows for families to build trust and relationships with the College Circles team and other parents. Each weekly session has a different discussion topic. These topics are intentionally designed to make the application process and transition to college smoother for both parents and students. Weekly topics include: familial relationships, the application process, the parent's role in the college search, setting boundaries, managing expectations, college cost, and the college transition.
No. College Circles sessions are designed only for parents and guardians of high school students. To ensure group conversations remain honest and transparent, we ask that students do not attend these sessions. If students are interested in meeting with a member of the College Circles team, this can be arranged outside of group sessions.
No. While College Circles is co-facilitated by a licensed therapist, it is not therapy, counseling, mental health treatment, or a therapeutic support group. College Circles is an educational and discussion-based community designed to help parents navigate the high school and college admissions journey with guidance from experienced professionals. Participants are welcome to discuss common parenting challenges and concerns, but College Circles does not provide individualized mental health treatment, diagnosis, or clinical care. If you are seeking therapy or mental health services, we encourage you to work directly with a qualified mental health professional.
Each 8-week session is made up of its own cohort of parents and guardians. Unfortunately, this means that families cannot make up a missed week at a later time. However, we strongly believe that parents and guardians will still benefit from the group, even if they have to miss a week. Additionally, the College Circles team provides one complementary 1:1 session (30-60 minutes) for families to use within six weeks of the group's final meeting. During this session, we are happy to discuss the general content of any missed session(s). After each session, families will also receive a follow-up email with helpful notes and resources.
The College Circles group is intended only for families located in the United States. Further, weekly sessions are geared towards parents of U.S. citizens who are applying to college. If your child is not a U.S. citizen but you are located in the United States, then you are welcome to join. However, we strongly recommend scheduling an additional session with one of our former admissions officers to discuss nuances related to admissions, financial aid, and the application review process for international citizens.
